Underlayment is a layer of foam, cork, plastic or rubber between the flooring and the subfloor to block moisture, insulate or absorb sound. Cork is one of the best acoustic underlayments. Plastic moisture barrier pads help protect floors from warping, molds and mildew. Many floors already come with this type of underlayment attached. Comfort barrier is a special type of underlayment which incorporates the moisture barrier with a sound barrier.
