The Secret of Shaw's Success

Before rising to success, Shaw was first known as Star Dye Company, a small business that was founded in 1946 and involved in dyeing tufted scatter rugs. After achieving 300,000 in sales, founder Clarence Shaw started expanding the company dramatically and was soon finishing carpets as Star Finishing Company.

In 1967, it became a holding company and acquired Philadelphia Carpet Company. This marked the company’s move into carpet manufacturing. The holding company went public as Shaw Industries, Inc. in 1971 with approximately 43 million in sales and 900 employees.

The 1970s was a time of continued robust growth for Shaw. It generated its own supply of yarn in 1972 with the purchase of its first yarn plant. In 1973, Shaw acquired its first continuous dye plant. Modernizing plants and equipment in the early 1980s allowed the company to respond quickly to such breakthroughs as stain-resistant carpet.

In 1985, Shaw made its first appearance on the Fortune 500 list with more than 500 million in sales and close to 5,000 employees.

As it climbed to the top, Shaw started expanding its product portfolio. It started the rug division in 1993 and the hard surfaces division in 1998 with the launch of Shaw Ceramics. Today, Shaw is a full-service flooring company with more than 5 billion in annual sales and approximately 30,000 employees.

It was only in 2002 when Shaw began to offer laminate flooring. Not to be outdone by the more established brands, Shaw started its laminate line by opening a state-of-the-art laminate manufacturing facility no less.

Shaw Laminate floors are constructed in layers to create lasting, affordable, and beautiful floors. Layer one is a melamine backing layer which acts as a moisture barrier and provides structural integrity. Layer two is an ultra-dense coreboard with MoistureSeal. It provides even more structural stability and moisture defense. The third layer is the décor layer which features either a natural hardwood or stone design. The final layer is a melamine wear top layer with a tough, beautiful finish.

Shaw laminates also feature the company’s patented VersaLock™ Glueless Flooring System. This revolutionary product advancement enables quick installation without glue so there's no messy clean up and you can walk on it immediately. This patented locking technology reliably secures the flooring panels on all four sides without adhesive. As an added bonus, a VersaLock floor is warranted against moisture damage and can be easily taken apart and reassembled.

With the latest in laminate construction technology, you can be assured that:

  • Shaw Laminate flooring is durable and stain-resistant
  • It has a patented tongue-and-groove locking technology that does away with gaps at the seams and installs quickly
  • Shaw Laminate flooring can be taken apart and re-installed as needed
