Hardwood Flooring And Older Dogs

Q: I have 2 dogs 10,13,yrs. So i have to plan for accidents.my mother had gym finish on her floor, does any hardwood come with a protective finish or should i go for another type flooring? I've been told tile is out because the urine would stain the grout. I 'm on s.s. so cost is a major consideration. Thanks, Jan

A: Wood flooring typically does come with a finish, but not one built to prevent damage from moisture standing on the floor. Your best bet is going to be something like vinyl or linoleum. These are far better suited to spills from pets and should resist staining far better than wood flooring and even tile when the grout is concerned.

I would suggest looking into roll out product, though vinyl tile would also suffice. You should be able to find a good vinyl or linoleum at a decent price, but keep in mind that it would be good idea to avoid wood flooring as pet messes which stay in place for more than a couple minutes can spell disaster.
