Couple's sustainable home features hardwood flooring
Couple's sustainable home features hardwood flooring Although it is reaching the middle of the summer, the snowbanks outside Stephanie and Jim Finegan's Colorado home have only been gone for a month. According to the Steamboat Today, because their Steamboat Springs home, which sits about 8,000 feet above sea level, is in one of the coldest areas in the country, the Finegan's wanted to have effective insulation, but wanted to do so in the greenest way possible.
Part of the Finegans' strategy to build their house of sustainable materials was to install hardwood flooring. They chose to use Austrian cypress because, according to Jim Finegan, the material is extremely durable and will rarely have to be replaced.
The Finegans' use of hardwood flooring is only one of a handful of eco-friendly aspects - the homeowners added a door-less closet which allows a wealth of natural light to enter.
While the Finegan' installed hardwood flooring in an effort to be environmentally conscious, the material offers other benefits as well. According to the World Floor Covering Association, hardwood flooring not only offers warmth and character to a room but it may increase resale value.
