Bamboo flooring featured in design awards contestant Although the AIA Honolulu Design Awards have yet to announce the winners, the homes entered in the contest have revealed some of the biggest trends in home design. According to the Honolulu Star Adviser, many of the abodes open up space and utilize green building techniques and materials.
"Jurors were struck by the entries' success in balancing a modern aesthetic with retention of design features appropriate to our island home and lifestyle," AIA president Charles Kaneshiro said in a statement, the news source reports.
One of the entered homes on the island of Kahala was designed by architect Jeff Long, who tried to incorporate as many green aspects as possible. Long's design won a Gold award for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The home featured drought-resistant plants, a moisture sensitive watering system and bamboo flooring.
According to TLC.com, bamboo flooring boasts a number of advantages for homeowners. Along with being eco-friendly, the material is durable, and can be dyed into a number of different colors to match any decorating style.
